| Announcement of a new Parish Priest
Just before the 7.00 p.m. Mass on Thursday the 30th of August, Bishop Mario Grech addressed the congregation present in the Church. His Lordship thanked Canon Reuben Micallef for his twelve years of service as parish priest of Żebbuġ. He also announced that Canon John Sultana, Rector for the last twenty years of the Church of St Anthony the Abbot in Xagħra will be the new archpriest of Żebbuġ. Then, Canon Sultana addressed the congregation and asked the parshioners present to pray for him at the beggining of his new mission. Mass of Thanksgiving for Archpriest Can Reuben Micallef On Sunday the 4th of November, at 10. 30 a.m. Canon Reuben Micallef presided over a Mass of Thanksgiving. Hundreds of parishioners were present for the Mass. Canon Micallef preached. At the end of the Mass, the new Archpriest Canon John Sultana, members of the Santa Marija Band and members of various other parish groups presented Canon Micallef with gifts of appreciation. A small party followed on the church precints. Vigil of prayer On Friday the 9th of November, a Vigil of Prayer took place in the Church. Various parishioners read prayers. A Celebration of the Word of God took place. Rector of the Diocesan Seminary Rev. Richard N Farrugia delivered a religious speach about the importance of the role of the shepherd in the community. Hundreds of people attended. Prayers were offered for the new parish priest. Feast of Saint Fortunatus On Saturday the 10th of November the feast of Saint Fortunatus was celebrated with Mass at 5 p.m. The procession at the end of the Mass did not take place due to bad weather. Installment of the new Archpriest On Sunday the 11th of November, the Lord Mayor and Members of the Żebbuġ Local Council welcomed the new archpriest Canon John Sultana infront of the Każin Santa Marija. The Lord Mayor Nickie Saliba delivered the address. Then, Canon Sultana was accompanied to the Parish Church. Chev. Charles Saliba delivered an address on the Church porch. The Concelebrated Mass began at 5.00 p.m. Bishop Mario Grech presided. At the end of the Mass, a street party followed in Triq il-Madonna taċ-Ċiċri. Everybody was welcome. Advent and Christmas Celebrations On Saturday the 15th of December, the Christmas Novena began at the 6.00 p.m. Mass. Archpriest Canon John Sultana celebrated the Mass on this day and on all the consecutive days of the Novena ending on Sunday the 23rd of December. Annual Christmas Concert The Santa Marija Choir organized the Nativivate Domini Christmas Concert in the Parish Church at the end of the Novena. The Choir sang various carols. The choir was under the direction of Ms Maria Cefai and organist Franco Cefai accompanied on the organ. Chev Joe M Attard was the compere. The Midnight Mass The Liturgy of the Midnight Mass began at 12.00 a.m. Archpriest Canon John Sultana presided. Before the Mass, a pageant was organized. Altar servers Tristen Cini and Owen Saliba delivered the Prietka tat-Tifel which was in the form of a dialogue. Members of the Society of Christian Doctrine (SDC) animated the pageant. The parish choir took part. |
