| First Day of the Kwindiċina
Saturday the 10th of August is the first day of the traditional Kwindiċina or fifteen days leading to the Solemnity. At 7.00 p.m. Fr Joseph Attard celebrated Mass. At 8.00 pm. the Vigil of Prayer took place on the church parvis, presided by Rev Fr Marcello Ghirlando OFM. At the end of the Vigil, the statue was brought out onto the parvis amid the clapping and shouting of the people gathered. The Innu Popolari known as ‘Mal-Qtajja’ tal-Anġli’ was sung. Later on, the statue was placed on its plinth in the middle of the church. First Solemn Mass of New Bishop Sunday the 11th of August. At 9.45 a.m. the Santa Marija Band welcomed newly ordained bishop Giovann Cefai MSSP, the first bishop to hail from Żebbuġ and the first order for the Missionary Society of Saint Paul founded fifty years ago by Mgr Joseph DePiro, at the main entrance of the convent. His Lordship was then escorted to the Parish Church where he celebrated Mass at 10.30 a.m. Many priests concelebrated. A new hymn was sung in his honour by the children at the end of the Mass. After the Mass, the new Bishop blessed the Chapel/Prayer Room of the Blessed Sacrament at the back of the Church, which was paid for by Archpriest Can. John Sultana. The murals were painted by Natanael Theuma. The Mass was transmitted on TVM2. Decoration for the statue of Santa Marija ta’ barra Tuesday the 13th of August is a day dedicated to the benefactors of the parish. At the end of the Mass, a decoration known locally as stellarju is put around the head of the statue of Santa Marija known as ta’ barra. It is a gift by the members of the assocation that looks after the decorations in the streets and squares of our village known as L-Għaqda tal-Armar. Last Wednesday Wednesday the 14th of August was the last Wednesday in preparation for the titular feast. Fr Louis Mallia MSSP celebrated Mass and preached the homily. Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Thursday the 15th of August is the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Assumption into Heaven. At 11.00 a.m. Rev Joseph Bajada said Mass for the parish youth. First Day of the Triduum Wednesday the 21st of August is the First Day of the Triduum in preparation for the Feast. Fr Joe Buttigieg OFM. Cap. will be the preacher for the three days of the Triduum. The Eve of the Solemnity Saturday the 24th of August is the eve of the Solemnity. At 9.00 a.m. Rev. Canon Noel Saliba celebrates Mass at the end of which the Te Deum will be sung in thanksgiving. At 6.30 p.m. the Translation of the Relic from the Santa Marija Band Club chapel to the Church takes place succeed by High Mass presided by Vicar General Mgr Tarċisju Camilleri. The Solemnity of the Titular Feast At 9.00 a.m. Solemn Mass presided by Bishop Mgr Giovanni Cefai MSSP. At 7.15 p.m. the Procession with the titular statue of Santa Marija will take place. The Hymn Alla Beata Vergine Maria Assunta in Cielo will by sung with accompaniment by the Santa Marija Band. At the end of the procession, the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be imparted. |
