Feast of the Lady of 'Ghazziela'

Recently the feast of the Madonna tal-Għażżiela was held in the parish community of Żebbuġ, Gozo. The għażżiela is another word for a piece of unleavened bread forming the letter M which is the initial for the Virgin Mary and which is produced in thousands in the locality of Żebbuġ, Gozo and then distributed to the faithful. According to an ancient tradition, the għażżiela is then put behind the main doors of private residences to keep evil spirits at bay and it is aimed to protect houses from lightening. Mass was said at 4. 30 p.m. by Archpriest Fr Reuben Micallef and succeeded by a procession which was accompanied by the Santa Marija Band of the village.
