New Mass for St Mary’s Wednesdays
On Wednesday the 30th of May (2012), the Santa Marija choir of our parish under the direction of Mrs. Maria Cefai and Mrs. Jacqueline Vella accompanied by the parish organist Franco Cefai sang a new Mass composed by Franco Cefai himself. Franco Cefai who is a promising musician and composer and who is at present undergoing his tertiary education has been working on this latest composition of his for the last year or so. The new Mass consists of the traditional Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. The Mass was sung for the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the Santa Marija Band that was established in Zebbug in May 1995. During the Mass that was presided by Canon. Carmelo Cini, Spiritual Director of the Band (and Cantor of the Gharb Collegiate Church) was the fifth among the fifteen Masses that are celebrated on the fifteen Wednesdays preceding the liturgical solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin. During this Mass, some new hymns were also sung. At the beginning, the introductory hymn was a new rendition by Franco Cefai of ‘Diehla go Qalbi’ which is itself an adaptation into Maltese of "Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna" by Joe Galea. During the offertory, Blessed John Henry Newman’s Praise to the Holiest in the Heights put to music be Sir Edward Elgar was sung according to the Maltese translation by Fr. Geoffrey G. Attard. The communion hymn was an original one composed by Franco Cefai himself and called Debha Maltija. At the end of Mass, Fil-Hlewwa ta’ Mejju, Dun Karm’s renowned Marian hymn put to music by Mro. Giuseppi Caruana was sung by the choir. The liturgy came to its conclusion with solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and the singing of Mro. Antonio Mallia’s Innu lil Santa Marija.
