Il-Madonna tal-Ghazziela
On Sunday, the 11th of September 2011, our parish celebrated the Feast known locally as Il-Madonna tal-Ghazziela. The feast is celebrated on the nearest Sunday to the 12th of September, the liturgical feast-day of the Holy Name of Mary. The tradition of the ghazziela is peculiar to our parish; it is only in Zebbug, Gozo that the ghazziela is made by the local people. The Concelebration was presided by Fr. Joseph Vella, a priest from our locality who early in July returned back to his native Gozo after many years of service in the United States; he is now a retired priest. In his homily, Fr. Vella mentioned that the Zebbugin manufacture about 7,000 ghazziela which are then freely distributed to both locals and foreigners. After the 4.00 pm Mass, the procession with the statue of the Virgin Mary marched through the streets of Zebbug accompanied by the Santa Marija Band. The Rosary was recited during the procession while the Band played various Marian hymns. The celebration ended with the Benediction and the kissing of the Relic.
